Background
Anna is a woman in her early 20s who lacks the ability to speak and initially does not interact with those around her. While at first she appears to be autistic, Dr. Rosen determines that she has severe apraxia, which is a neurological condition that affects the ability to repeat muscular movements. Because of this, she is unable to speak as she cannot consistently coordinate the muscles in her mouth to form speech. However, Gary discovers that she has developed her own language based on those muscle movements that she can perform consistently, using a hairbrush and other items. While the team initially believes that Red Flag was using Anna to encode all of their messages, Anna tells Gary the truth--"I don't work for them; they work for me." Anna appears to be the leader of Red Flag.
Gary forms a particular attachment to Anna, as she is handicapped in her ability to communicate without help, much as he is.
